I began an MA Design in NCAD last September and hope to graduate in 2011.
My proposal is to create a contemporary prayerbook in the tradition of a Book of Hours, illustrating excerpts from the Divine Office using letterpress and print techniques.
The Divine Office is the name given to the daily prayers that are said by members of Catholic religious orders and priests. It is a series of psalms, hymns and scripture readings designed to fit in with the natural rhythm of the day and provide a framework by which the monastic day is supported. While the religious are obliged to say the prayers each day, lay members of the church are also encouraged to say a selection of the prayers. My focus will be on Night Prayer, the traditional prayer at the end of the day.
Through selecting the text, designing the work and making the final piece I hope to produce a coherent, interesting and beautiful book and gain experience and skills in the different printing methods. The final piece will be a personal expression of my own interests in print, art, design, books and religion.
